One day
Zac went on a road trip and his parents turned the radio on and
Zac began singing along. His parents then asked him, "
Zac would you like to think about maybe taking piano lessons?" He then responded, "No way, that's stupid." They then asked him if he thought he was musical and he responded: "not really." When
Zac was eleven he told his parents he didn't want to play baseball anymore.
Zac then took up piano instead. His piano teacher encouraged him to try out for a role in a play called
Gypsy. After he landed this initial role, he continued acting in plays such as
Once Upon a Mattress,
Peter Pan,
The Music Man,
Mame, and
Little Shop Of Horrors.
Zac's middle school drama teacher, Robyn Metchik realized his acting and singing potential and contacted an agent friend.
Zac then landed several television roles.
Zac Efron made his debut on
Firefly as Dr. Simon Tam in a flashback. He was cast as a recurring guest on the WB's
Summerland as Cameron.
Zac eventually became a regular; however, the show was cancelled.
Zac appeared in a Lifetime movie,
Miracle Run, which earned him a lot of attention.
Zac then starred as
Troy Bolton in
High School Musical, which was a huge hit, viewed by 38 million viewers in the US alone. Efron received flack from
fans when it was revelead that his voice had been mixed with Andrew Seeley in "
Get'cha Head in the Game" and "
Breaking Free"; however,
Zac did most of the singing himself. Apparently,
Zac was just coming out of puberty and having difficulty hitting the higher notes. It has been speculated that Andrew Seeley would only sell "
Get'cha Head in the Game" to Disney if he was allowed to sing it. Seeley has not written any songs for
High School Musical 2 or
High School Musical 3.
Zac will be doing all of his own singing in these films.

In 2006,
Zac was accepted to both USC and UCLA. He chose to go to USC because of its acclaimed film program. USC deferred
Zac's enrollment so that he can finish filming additional movies. In 2007, Efron moved into his own apartment with many of his
High School Musical cast mates as neighbors.
Zac's next big role was as Link Larkin in
Hairspray. Efron received great reviews for his performance and the film grossed just under 28 million in it's opening weekend. Then, the Disney Channel premiered
High School Musical 2, which shattered cable ratings.
Zac will be starring in
17 Again about a man who wishes he could go back to high school and wakes up as a teenager. He will be co-starring with Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann, and Michelle Trachtenberg. The movie will be released in August 2008. It is also rumored that a remake of
Footloose is in the works and that
Zac Efron will be the lead.
Zac Efron will be starring in
High School Musical 3: Senior Year, which will hit theaters October 24th, 2008.
Zac has indicated that this will be his last
High School Musical movie.
